The Zooscan

The zooscan is an afordable and efficient system to digitalize and analyze zooplankton samples. Fresh and fixed samples can be digitized directly. However, animals must be immobile during digitization. Images are automatically analyzed and more than 300 measurements are made for each individual. A sample of 1500 individual is typically imaged and analyzed in less than 20 minutes. The average daily number of organisms processed is about 3500. The process includes :
-  daily blank
-  sample scanning and metadata recording
-  image process (normalization, blank subtract)
-  variable (size) measurement for each object of the images
-  prediction of the identification
-  validation of the prediction and final sorting to up to 35 groups.

Each of the 3500 organism is measured and both validated identification and object size are obtained.

Is it a complex system for specialists ?

The Zooscan combines an advanced digitizing technology with most recent image analysis algorithms. The whole process is transparent for user. An intuitive graphical interface eases all steps. There is thus no need to be a specialist to use it. Thanks to interactive graphs where points can be clicked and vignettes corresponding individual pop up manual identification of individual is quick and simple.

What is the quality of the digitized pictures ?

The Zooscan is dedicated to the rapid identification and measurement of thousands of zooplankton items. Consequently, the quality of the digitized pictures is a tradeoff beetween more details and more items/faster scan. Yet, the quality of the images is good enough to allow manual identification of the individuals, at least to the family for most species. Most details in the silouette, but also inside the body, are captured for individuals measuring more than 200 microns. Contouring of individuals are done without lost of details for further automatic recognition.

The other important feature of the Zooscan/Zooprocess system is the full intercompatibility of the images and variable measured using all the systems. Zooprocess insure image NORMALIZATION, metadata easy collection and record all the processes leading to the final results. The Zooscan/Zooprocess assemblage uses the same quality check procedures than any chemical/physical laboratory instrument.

What can I do with the Zooscan ?

The Zooscan is designed to speed up zooplankton detremination and facilitate archiving of samples. It is much more faster and easier compared to fastidious sessions of manual identification under the binocular. The images can be shared though Internet and allow collective remote identification by specialists world wide. Since all individuals are measured, the Zooscan provides both qualitative and quantitative information on each item, allowing to study size distributions. Digitized pictures can be archived and revisited at any time providing an excellent mean to record plankton time series. Results from the Zooscan can feed biodiversity and marine life databases.
